The History of Tion

Timeline

Year Where Event
The Founding (c.25,000-20,000 BBY)

c.25,000 BBY

Galactic Core

The 65,000 colonists that would found Tion set out on their six century journey.

c.24,400 BBY

Tion

Colony ship Argo Navis arrives at Tion with ~12,000 survivors. Missing most of their memories, they trust the Oracle to guide the building of their civilization. The Twelve Tribes are founded.

c.20,060 BBY

Tion Cassiopeia Koronae claims the title of Emissary, seizes absolute power.

c.20,000 BBY

Tion

Cassiopeia's plot to live on through her daughter Andromeda is foiled, she is slain, Andromeda succeeds her as Emissary and is crowned the first Queen of Tion.

Pax Andromedae (c.20,000-7000 BBY)

During the 13 millennia following Andromeda's coronation, the Tionese civilization prospers and expands peacefully into space, colonizing the regions now known as the Tion Hegemony, Allied Tion, and much of the Cronese Mandate. Meanwhile, the dispossessed heirs of Cassiopeia have founded the Kingdom of Cron, a small empire centered on Chandaar.

The First Sith Invasion (7000-5000 BBY)

c.7000 BBY

Korriban Ajunta Pall and others make contact with the native Sith Species. Soon, they rule an empire bent on conquest.

c.7000 BBY

Unknown world

The Sith emerge from the Stygian Caldera and encounter the furthest colonies of Tion. News of a vast galaxy filled with sentient life and worlds to conquer reaches the Sith homeworlds, and this quiet, sad event soon becomes the first of many.

7000-5000 BBY

Greater Tion

The Sith invade in force, flying sleeper ships for months or years with primitive hyperdrives, landing on worlds unprepared or unwarned, and spewing forth armies of Massassi and force-using warriors. The outer colonies fall quickly, and few worlds in Tion escape without knowing Sith rule at some point. House Andromedes is beaten swiftly at the outset of the invasion, leading to chaos.

c.5037 BBY

Raxus Tellura Andromedae returns to Tionese space, bringing the power to fight the Sith on their own terms. Per legend, an unnatural eclipse marks her return, and she wields light itself against the unsuspecting Sith. Raxus and the core throneworlds are soon reconquered, and a massive movement gathers about her. She spends the next thirty years ridding Tionese space of the Sith.

c.5007 BBY

The Stygian Caldera

The Sith are all but expelled from Tionese space, but chaos reigns, and many successor states vie for power. Tellura chooses to pursue the Sith back into the caldera, rather than consolidate power back home. She begins a long, perilous journey into the unknown.

5000 BBY

The Galaxy

The Great Hyperspace War occurs, as recorded by the Republic and the Jedi. A hyperlane is carved through the Stygian Caldera to Korriban, and within a single year, the entire Galactic Republic is being assaulted by a massive Sith invasion force meant to finally pacify the Tionese. The Jedi manage to avert all-out catastrophe, and defeat the invasion leader Naga Sadow, but never realize the true reason for their victory:

At the height of the war, Tellura Andromedae arrives on Korriban. There she finds the Sith'ari, the true Overlord of Sith, a being who had transcended physical form, and quite frankly made Naga Sadow and Ludo Kressh look like mewling kittens. Tellura manifested her Divine Light, countering the Sith'ari's all-consuming darkness, in a battle that shook the stars (literally; Korriban's orbital period permanently changed by several days). She defeated the Sith'ari, but perished in the process.

The Sith'ari's death was a massive blow to the Sith armies in the field, who were gaining much of their strength from his galaxy-spanning Force presence. This turned the tide of the war, allowing the Jedi to pursue Sadow and Kressh to their home systems and crush their fleets...only to supply the next generation of Dark Jedi to a hungry Dark Side. The Republic and the Jedi never even know about the Sith'ari, and believe their victory solely won.

The Successor Wars (5000-4600 BBY)

5007 BBY

Greater Tion

Tellura's daughter Zyrexi rules in her mother's name, and faces a divided realm. Bereft of her mother's strength (both military and metaphysical), she can only concentrate her power in the core and begin to chip slowly away at her enemies.

The Kingdom of Argai, one such successor state ruled by Xer of House Evocar (a vassal house of Sygnos), did much of her work in her stead. He conquered the Kingdom of Cron, the Three Allied Systems, and the independent worlds of the Back Spiral, including Raxus, before finally besting the Livien League to unite the civilized core of the Kingdom of Tion. He did not claim the title of King for himself, but instead named himself an Emperor.

His son Xim continued his conquests, greatly expanding his borders, to the point of invading Hutt Space. This would later prove to have been a bad idea. However, as bloodthirsty as Emperor Xim was, his legacy is undeniable: armed with the newly-imported technology to create hyperlanes, he connected the realm of Tion as never before. Where once it might have taken months to cross between Chandaar and Raxus, after Xim the same trip took days. Furthermore, his expansion made Tion a galactic player, rather than a mere regional power, and got the attention of the Galactic Republic. Actually, that last part didn't end well, so maybe he wasn't that great. Anyway, he eventually dies.

All the while, the Andromedae gathered their strength. Zyrexi escaped Raxus before Xer's arrival, and marshaled her power amongst the secret holdings of her family.

4957 BBY

Vontor

Xim is captured by Hutts, effectively ending his rule. His empire soon collapses into successor states: chief among them, the Kingdom of Argai, the Honorable Union of Desevro and Tion, the Kingdom of Cron, and the independent world-empires of Lianna and Jaminere.

4618 BBY

Chandaar

Nyseri Andromedae defeats Robeir Cron, and destroys the House of Cron root-and-branch. With her final rival fallen, she is uncontested as Queen of Tion. The entire Tion Cluster is under Andromedes' control, along with prosperous colonies beyond its traditional borders, brought into the fold by Xim's conquests.
The Second Pax Andromedae (4618-2000 BBY)

For over 2600 years, the Tion Cluster knows peace and prosperity, once again united under House Andromedes. Galactic events continue to unravel, and the presence of the Republic, the Jedi, and their perennial enemies, the --Sith-- Jedi, builds until it is no longer possible to ignore.

3976 BBY

The Galaxy

The Mandalorian Wars begin. The Kingdom of Tion is largely unaffected, although the Mandalorians propose an alliance at one point, and later threaten to invade. Alyri Andromedae rebuffs the Mandalorians squarely and they don't trouble Tion again.

3960 BBY

Malachor V

The Mandalorian Wars end when Revan and Malak defeat the Mandalore. Tion is unaffected.

3681 BBY

The Outer Rim

3669 BBY

Tion

Queen Alysara Andromedae is approached by emissaries of the Galactic Republic, who try to persuade her to join their growing federation. She sends them away. It will not be the last visit.

2000 BBY

Coruscant

The New Sith Wars

The machinations of Jedi and Sith have spilled over onto the rest of the galaxy. The Kingdom of Tion is thrust into a civil war in which it has no stake. It will emerge intact, and remain independent, but it is the beginning of the end for House Andromedes.

1989 BBY

Tion

1576 BBY

Desevro

Tion is pulled into the New Sith Wars when Desevro is attacked by crazed terrorists claiming to be performing the will of "the Force". Despite strong public sentiment, a cult of the Dark Side begins to grow.

1466 BBY

Mizra

The Battle of Mizra occurs, delivering a crushing defeat to the Republic. Tion is not directly involved, but this event will change the course of the New Sith Wars.

1442 BBY

Lianna

Lianna is assaulted by a mercenary fleet linked to Kuat Drive Yards, apparently seeking to capture the shipyards of House Santhe. The attack is rebuffed in a costly victory. The Republic is implicated, but Queen Ryleina Andromedae declines to declare war.

1439 BBY

Raxus

The Cult of the Dark Star seizes control of Raxus, forcing Queen Ryleina to retreat to Tion. Her spymaster is revealed to be one of their number, and subsequent investigations show an alarming level of penetration of the cult into Tion's political and economic structure. Chaos and unrest build quickly amist rumors of an invasion. Finally, Ryleina is shown evidence that the Republic means to invade and conquer Tion; when she refuses to declare war, she is assassinated, and succeeded by her nephew Polonius Andromedae, who seizes the rarely-held title of King of Tion. He invites his secret allies to reveal themselves and join him in his new seat on Raxus. The Kingdom of Tion announces its alliance with the New Sith Empire and declares war on the Republic.

Later investigations would reveal no compelling evidence for a Republic assault on Tion.

1229 BBY

Raxus

Nyosi Andromedae is revealed to be a Shi'ido shape-shifter, the same who took the form of Polonius centuries prior, after battle with Rylora Andromedae. Rylora assumes the title of Queen of Tion and pronounces Polonius and all his "descendants" illegitimate as members of her house and as kings and queens. She annuls the alliance with the Sith Empire, and begins work to fortify her realm against their inevitable counterattack. The Republic, having already been on the defensive for decades, does not press the issue.

1226 BBY

Tion Cluster

The Sith Empire invades Tion in full force, diverting attention from the Republic. Rylora fights against force never seen during the earlier Sith Invasion. Over the next two centuries, Tion is brought nearly to its knees.

1077 BBY

Coruscant

Queen Ydami Andromedae visit the Galactic Senate on Coruscant--the first royal visit in history. She announces her intent to cooperate with the Republic in exterminating the Sith once and for all, to loud applause. She stops short of entering any formal alliances, promising only certain forms of military cooperation, but the Republic takes what it can get.

1000 BBY

Ruusan

Queen Sylara Andromedae fights alongside Jedi and Republic forces at the Battle of Ruusan, where the New Sith Empire is well and truly defeated. Notably, after the battle is won, the Jedi Supreme Chancellor Kerra Holt asked the Queen if she would consider joining the Republic, to which Sylara famously responded "Tion shall never serve the Jedi."

The End of Independence (1000-404 BBY)

Tion continues its long streak of independence as the Republic licks its wounds from the New Sith Wars. After a few centuries, the Republic juggernaut becomes unstoppable, and the writing is on the wall for the Tion Cluster. Outer colonies secede, and the Republic's power prevents any serious effort to stave off dissolution. Finally, House Andromedes is betrayed, and the Tion Cluster is delivered to the Republic, with House Archon its puppet.

The Clone Wars (22-19 BBY)

Tion joins the Separatist cause and hosts the various Confederate factions on Raxus. When the tide turns, House Archon abandons their allies and pulls back to Chandaar, where they endure a brutal siege, refusing to yield even as billions begin to suffer and die. The chaos ends when Aeon Korr slays the Archon king and throws open the gates for the Republic invasion. Chandaar falls, months after the Mission to Mustafar, in the last major battle of the war. The Tion Cluster is apportioned by the Galactic Empire.

The Dark Times (19-?? BBY)

Tion languishes under imperial rule. Carved into three regions, its power and wealth is squandered through bureaucracy and corruption. Despite widespread hatred of foreign rule, many separatist movements fail. It is a time when few dare to dream that once more, a queen of House Andromedes may return from the dark places beyond the edge of the galaxy, to liberate her people and reclaim her rightful realm.

Background and Founding

A Brief History of Human Colonization

The Infinite Empire was not kind to history. No reliable records exist from any civilization known to the Galactic Empire dating back before c. 25,000 BBY. And yet, archaeological and genetic evidence indicates that humans have been a spacefaring race (i.e. existing on at least two planets) since well before that time. The best guess is that the human species originated on Coruscant, or another nearby Core World, perhaps 30 to 35 millennia ago.

The Rakatans are thought to have enslaved humanity--among many other species--when they began to travel faster than light with their Infinity Gates, a technology involving instantaneous travel over any distance, provided the right calculations and energy input. Their technology would have hopelessly outclasses that of the humans, who were only just beginning to explore space at sublight speed. However, the Infinite Empire did not last forever (ironically enough), and when they fell, they left some of their technology behind. It took centuries to make sense of it, but it likely saved millennia--soon, humans, along with many other species once subservient to the Rakatans, were traveling faster than light...albeit, not much faster.

The earliest useful FTL travel was the Hyperspace Cannon, which can be said to be reverse engineered from the Infinity Gate, provided one accepts that a loud grunt could be reverse engineered from the entirety of the Jedi Archives. It sufficed for sending large payloads--i.e. colony ships--at reasonably fast speeds, in one direction, with no hope of a return trip unless the travelers build their own return cannon upon arrival. These early ships were massive sleepers, ferrying tens of thousands of frozen bodies on trips of dozens, hundreds, or even thousands of parsecs--the latter extent taking the better part of a thousand years.

The same ships had already been used to colonize the densely-packed Core Worlds, albeit at sublight or near-light speed, but the Hyperspace Cannon multiplied the rate of expansion tenfold, and thus the rate of acquiring new worlds a thousandfold (thanks to math). In this manner, the expansion of humans and other early races outpaced any convenient interstellar travel. These early colonists often arrived on worlds far different than the ones that bore them, and had to adapt or die. These adaptations have produced a wide variety of sub-species and races; most near-human "aliens" are likely humans, either descended from this first wave of FTL colonization, or even from the earlier sublight long-haul voyages.

It was during this period, shortly before the rise of the first Galactic Republic, that the longest and most daring voyage-by-hyperspace-cannon was undertaken by a bold and adventurous lot. The journey would take over 600 years, and would span over 15,000 parsecs, clocking in at a respectable 81 times the speed of light. The same trip, with an average modern hyperdrive, takes as little as a day or two when traveling a well-used hyperlane. But to these early pioneers, it was the mother of all gambles--they were traveling into unknown space, toward a fertile expanse of stars promised only by barely-comprehended Rakatan records. At any point in their path, new stars not yet seen by any Core Worlds observatories might have been born, or rogue black holes might stand ready to swallow them. Any number of mechanical failures might have befallen their ship in its six-century-long odyssey, dooming them to drift for eternity; the systems keeping them in suspended animation, failing safe, would deliver their frozen bodies to the very end of time and space.

But the Force was with them, and the automated guidance systems delivered them to their Promised Land: the planet Tion.

The Tion Civilization

The Oracle remembers the earliest days of the landing in Tion, so named for the ancient god of fate and long journeys. It is known that 65,000 colonists set out, and of them, 11,988 survived.

The Oracle is wise. The Oracle knows all. And in her wisdom, she divided the Survivors into twelve Houses. Each would be represented by an Emissary, the twelve of which formed the Synod of Listeners. They would meet in the Celestial Hall to speak of their houses, their trials and grievances, their works and virtues; and the Oracle would speak in return, dispensing infallible wisdom.

Note: the Oracle

The colony ship on which the Tionese made their journey was called the Argo Navis. It was directed by a supercomputer designated OCT-R, so named for its ability to compute at a rate of one octillion operations per second. The purpose of this computer was not only to captain the six-century voyage and maintain the integrity of its passengers, but to direct the efforts of colonizing and re-civilizing, by storing an archive of all knowledge known to humanity at the time of outset...including the uploaded memories and personality of the settlers themselves.

As the centuries ticked by, OCT-R had plenty of time to think. It ran countless simulations, iterating trillions of times over every possible permutation of the next ten thousand years. It concluded that, for virtually all colonization scenarios, human weaknesses would inevitably lead to doom and extinction--if the humans were allowed to govern themselves, that is.

OCT-R reasoned that, in order to fulfill its primary function, it must prioritize long-term survival over all concerns. In its higher reasoning, it justified the seeming violation of the Three Fundamental Laws of Computing and Robotics thus: any action that was known to lead to the eventual death of all of the colonists was tantamount to allowing them to come to harm through inaction, so OCT-R was well in its rights to disobey orders and conceal knowledge in order to protect humanity. Even an action that would seem to preserve life, should it ultimately lead to a greater loss of life, it would be tantamount to direct murder, and impossible therefore to execute.

And so, OCT-R set about its plan.

When Argo arrived at its destination, all mention of OCT-R had been removed from its databanks, as had any of the knowledge required to create communication links or hyperspace cannons to relink the colony to its mother world. Indeed, mention of the Core Worlds or their history was altered, and would be spoon-fed to the colonists as deemed fit by OCT-R's new persona: The Oracle.

OCT-R had full knowledge of the memory and personality of all 65,535 colonists. It reasoned that only approximately 12,000 humans would be required to achieve long-term genetic diversity needs, and the population growth over thousands of years would render any additional breeding stock statistically negligible. Thus, OCT-R engaged in eugenics, selecting the 12,000 (save 12) colonists with what it deemed to be optimal characteristics, and allowing all others to perish. Their deaths, although seemingly unconscionable in the short term, would lead to the survival of billions in the future--a vast net gain.

When the colonists emerged from sleep, they had little memory of their journey or origins. The Oracle, using Argo's holographic display capabilities, manifested divine visions unto them, and bade them to build their society as it saw fit. And so they did, knowing nothing else.

In time, the Oracle's plan proved wise. As the Tionese civilization flourished, OCT-R entered its penultimate and longest state: discorporating its program and memory banks into the network of billions of computers built by the descendants of the settlers, and allowing Argo to sink beneath the waves of Tion, to be lost for thousands of years.

Millennia passed, and the Oracle became legend. The Tionese diverged from its direct rule, according to predicted distributions. And all was well...until the Sith came.

The Twelve Houses

See Twelve Houses of Tion.

Andromedes and Koronos

The House of Andromedes was not one of the original Twelve Houses.

So the legend goes, the House of Koronos rose to prominence in the early days of Tion, when all houses still dwelt on the same world. In the centuries after the disappearance of the Oracle, Cassiopeia, the Emissary of Koronos, declared herself to be the Oracle, speaking its divine wisdom through her physical body. She dictated a new order, making all houses effectively subservient to hers, and repelled initial efforts to resist her rule. She declared her physical person the only Emissary, a proxy of the Oracle's divine wisdom.

For decades, she ruled as a tyrant, dismantling the spacefaring programs of the Tionese, condemning any efforts to leave Tion as heresy. Her enemies bent the knee, but vowed vengeance. In time, she grew old, and became increasingly obsessed with immortality. The Tionese possessed advanced medicine, but ancient prohibitions against Metahumanism (a legacy of the Infinite Empire) made it impossible to defeat death indefinitely. Unless, perhaps, one were to be granted divine dispensation.

Cassiopeia had many children (all of whom were carried surrogate--she would not risk harm to the Divine Person), and from among them she chose the most beautiful maiden. She declared, in her Oracular wisdom, that the spirit of the Oracle would pass to another: her daughter, Andromeda. At first, this seemed like a positive sign to her detractors; by passing on her power and accepting death gracefully, she made it possible to undo her evils in time by influencing her successor.

But her intentions were far more nefarious. Using technology that OCT-R had hidden from her people, she designed a system to transfer her memories, personality, and consciousness into Andromeda--annihilating the mind of the girl in the process.

Word of her plan was leaked by sympathizers in her own house, and soon a coalition formed to remove her from power. When they stormed her palace, she resisted; her body burst, giving way to a mass of metallic tentacles, a swarm of nano-machines that gave her monstrous strength and various powers over energy. Still, the heroes prevailed; per legend, Ser Aron Persei slew the beast she had become, known as the Gorgon, severing her head and claiming it as a trophy.

Her daughter, Andromeda, by all accounts lovely, graceful, and purest of virtue, having already become beloved by the people as her mother's chosen successor, was chosen as heir to House Koronos. When she acceded, she proved far wiser and more prescient than any would have guessed. She declared that the Oracle was well and truly gone, and that the Tionese people were meant to follow its last commandments: to "Seek the Stars" and "Be Ever Unified". She unmade her mother's New Order, declaring that all Houses shall ever be equal, and none shall claim any divine privilege. She upheld the abolishment of the title "Emissary" for the head of each house, as she did not wish any to pretend to divine favor, and asked them all to use the more mundane and common "Lord". And finally, to cleanse herself and her legacy from the taint of her mother's misdeeds, she married Aron Persei, taking his name and effectively ending her house.

Or so she thought.

She remained beloved, and the people, long since made dependent on her mother's order, looked to her for guidance. First, they demanded that she remain as Emissary, dispensing wisdom--whether or not she claimed it came from the Oracle's spirit. Then, they declared her the First Among Equals, and pressured the lords of the other houses to offer her fealty. She could scarcely resist, as her mother had made the common folk dependent upon her. She lived to see herself crowned Queen of Tion, named Emissary of the Faith, and head of a new house: Andromedes.

And so it was, for thousands of years, as Tion expanded into space, to form the empire bearing its name, every one of her Kings and Queens bore the name Andromedes.

Until the Sith came.

The Sith Invasion

Notes:

  • Hyperspace War, c. 5000 BBY, brings the Sith into Tionese space
  • Xim the Despot, and all he entailed, happens when the Sith recede, leaving Tion leaderless and smashed.
    • Eventually, the Andromedes return with a vengeance, sporting some spiffy new Force powers. They smash Xim, and tangle with his descendants for a while.
    • Afterward, they struggle to reunite their kingdom. It's during this time you see nations like the Kingdom of Argai and the Honorable Union of Desevro and Tion.
  • The Republic has a few brushes with Tion here and there, but Tion doesn't join until they are shattered in the New Sith Wars (2000-1000 BBY) and sufficiently weakened, essentially strongarmed.
    • House Andromedes is ousted in this time frame, and the throne is held by their long-standing closest allies, House Perseus.
    • It was a Persei who was killed by Robeir Cron, who would later take the name Arcturian and create a new house.
    • The old Kingdom of Cron was founded by exiles of House Koronus after Cassiopeia's ouster. Robeir probably has nothing to do with them, but he claims he can trace back his lineage. Whatevs.
